New Ghana Ambassador to Russia Outlines Vision for Bilateral Relations

On October 6th, Dr. Koma Steem Jehu-Appiah, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of Ghana to Russia, held his first meeting with the staff of the Ghanaian Mission in Russia. During this gathering, he shared his initial diplomatic goals and emphasized the importance of working as a team to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Ghana and Russia under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Jehu-Appiah began by expressing his gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, the staff at Jubilee House, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the people of Ghana for their support. He highlighted that this was an opportunity to build on the existing foundation of Ghana-Russia relations and take them to a new level.

The ambassador engaged in a detailed discussion with the mission staff on various current issues affecting bilateral cooperation. He identified key areas where collaboration could be enhanced, including deepening political dialogue to foster mutual understanding and strengthening economic ties within the frameworks established during the first and second Russia-Africa Summits.

As the head of the mission, Dr. Jehu-Appiah clearly outlined his goal of elevating the trajectory of Ghana-Russia relations. He noted that while the relationship has historically been based on political ties and mutual respect, there is now an opportunity to expand it into other areas of mutual interest.

One of the ambassador’s main tasks includes working closely with Russian investors to support President Mahama’s Special Initiative on Industrialization, particularly focusing on energy security under the Big Push Agenda. This initiative aims to promote a 24-hour economy, which Dr. Jehu-Appiah believes will bring significant benefits to both countries.

He urged the mission staff to work diligently and cooperatively to ensure the successful implementation of the president’s vision. By doing so, they can unlock new opportunities for cooperation and contribute to the collective well-being of both Ghana and Russia.

In addition to economic and political cooperation, Dr. Jehu-Appiah emphasized the importance of promoting cultural understanding and people-to-people connections. He recognized the role of education, arts, and tourism in building lasting relationships between the two nations.

Dr. Jehu-Appiah is a well-known member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has built a reputable political career. He previously served as Chairman of the Health Commission in 2024 before being appointed as the Ghanaian Ambassador to the Russian Federation.

Key Focus Areas for Ghana-Russia Collaboration

  • Political Dialogue: Enhancing communication and mutual understanding between the two nations.
  • Economic Cooperation: Strengthening ties through existing frameworks like the Russia-Africa Summits.
  • Industrialization and Energy Security: Supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development.
  • Cultural Exchange: Encouraging educational, artistic, and tourist exchanges to build stronger people-to-people connections.

Dr. Jehu-Appiah’s appointment marks a significant step in the evolution of Ghana-Russia relations. With his experience and vision, he is well-positioned to lead the mission in achieving its goals and fostering a more dynamic partnership between the two countries.

His approach reflects a commitment to not only maintaining traditional diplomatic ties but also exploring new avenues for collaboration that benefit both nations. As the ambassador begins his tenure, the focus remains on creating a solid foundation for future cooperation and ensuring that the interests of both Ghana and Russia are effectively represented.
